Aruvanpalli Puthiyapurayil Abdullakutty is an Indian politician. He was a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the 1990s. He was expelled from CPI(M) in 2009 and subsequently joined Indian National Congress. He represented the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency of Kerala in the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha. He is currently a Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Early and personal life[edit]

Abdullakutty was born in Narath village in Kannur district of Kerala on 8 May 1967 as the son of Moideen and Zainaba. He had his collegiate education from S. N. College, Kannur and acquired his law degree from Law Academy Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Abdullakutty married Dr. V.N. Rosina in 2000. The couple has a son, Aman Rose, and a daughter, Tamanna Abdulla.
Abdullakutty's autobiography is titled Ningalenne Congressakki.

Political life[edit]

A leader of Students' Federation of India during his college days, Abdullakutty became the General Secretary of Calicut University Student's Union in 1989. He served as Member of the Kannur District Panchayat from 1995 to 1999. He was elected to Parliament from Kannur Lok Sabha constituency twice (1999-2009). On 17 January 2009, CPI(M) Mayyil Area committee suspended Abdullakutty from the party for one year for praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's development model.[1] The expulsion of Abdullakutty from the CPI(M) was not wholly unexpected as it was the culmination of a rift between him and the party leadership in the district and the Modi-praising episode is viewed by many as a pretext for the same. He had earlier expressed the opinion that bandhs and hartals were detrimental to the State's interests. He had also announced that he was a believer in Islam and followed this up with a visit to the mosque to participate in the Ramadan prayers.
Abdullakutty joined the Indian National Congress in April 2009. He contested as an INC candidate for the Kannur Assembly constituency and won in the by-election held in November 2009. He also won the assembly election in 2011 from Kannur Assembly Constituency. He defeated Congress(S) supremo Kadannapalli Ramachandran by 6443 votes.

Accusation of sexual harassment[edit]

In March 2014, Saritha Nair, the prime accused in the 2013 Kerala solar panel scam, lodged a complaint of sexual harassment against A.P. Abdullakutty. She accused the MLA of licentious behaviour, late-night obscene calls, and persistent demands to meet him at various hotels. Saritha said she had met the MLA in good faith to promote her business and that he had turned her tormentor ever since. ( Abdullakutty has denied her allegations).[2][3] The latest developments created a new hurdle in the ruling party in Kerala. It was later revealed that the accusation was at the behest of Thampanoor Ravi to divert public attention from the case.
