Jatin Bora (Assamese: যতীন বৰা, born 25 April 1970) is an Indian film actor who has appeared in many Assamese language movies. Jatin's career has spanned for over 25 years as an actor. From his debut in 1989 to become the most sought-after poster boy of Assamese cinema, Jatin Bora has traversed a long way from a remote village of Assam to the annals of Assamese cultural history. He is also an actor and director in some Mobile Theatre groups of Assam like Aabahan, Hengul, Ashirbaad, Bhagyadevi, Kohinoor and Itihas.

Early life[edit]

Jatin Bora was born on April 25, 1970 to Sri Gakul Chandra Bora and Premolata Bora, in Kacholukhowa village, Nagaon, Assam.[1] He did his primary schooling in Marikalang Prathamik Vidyalaya. As a child he used to take part in Navajyoti Sangha Maina Parijat, a weekly children's cultural meet, near his village. He was taught the nuances of Bhaona; the traditional Assamese drama; as a child.
He completed his schooling from Dawson Higher Secondary and Multi Purpose School and started his college education from the Nagaon GNDG Commerce College. He went on to complete his graduation from Nowgong College.
His first stage performance was Lakshminath Bezbaroa’s Mukti when he was a student of class V.
Jatin is a diploma holder in Fine Arts from the famous Kallol Art School in Nagaon. Musically inclined from childhood, he is a ‘Visharad’ in Tabla. He trained in the Assamese classical Sattriya dance under the guidance of Rabin Chandra Das of Nagaon. Jatin Bora performed in Bhaonas during his childhood. In these Sattriya ekankika naats and the locally organized "Raas" festivals, he was generally selected to play the role of Krishna.

Marriage and family[edit]

On October 25, 2002, Jatin Bora married Navanita Sarma, an accomplished singer (trained under Sudesh Wadkar, Mumbai) and actress from Nagaon,Assam. They have a son and a daughter: Drishan and Aastha.

Career[edit]

Although he had a minuscule role in Kolahal, his first professional film, Jatin Bora officially debuted in Uttarkaal (1989) (opposite Moloya Goswami). The movie was successful, and Jatin became a star of the Assamese cinema.
After Uttarkal's success, Jatin Bora acted in a lot of plays for Doordarshan. He featured in several popular teleserials like Biju Phukan’s Deuta, Chandra Talukdar’s Namgharia, Birina Paator Anguthee, Jones Mahalia's Pratighat, Surangor Majere, Ghat-Pratighat, etc.
In 1993 he won a role in the popular film I Killed Him Sir.
He joined Hengul Theatre in 1994. Next year he got an offer from Abahon Theatre, then directed by the stalwart genius late Dr Bhabendra Nath Saikia and Munin Barua, for the 1995-96 season. He continues to be actively involved in Assamese moving theatre industry. Presently he is acting in Kohinoor Theatre. He acted in their plays written for Abahon. Later, Dr Bhabedranath Saikia cast him for his first and only Hindi film Kaalsandhya.[2]
He started his directorial venture in 2006 with a film called Adhinayak (opposite Nishita Goswami). This film was extensively shot in Barapani, Cherrapunji and in and around Guwahati.

His first major success came with Munin Barua's film Hiya Diya Niya (opposite debutant Luna Lahkar), which broke all box office records and became a cult film. This film revived hopes of survival for commercial Assamese cinema, which was struggling due to the overwhelming onslaught of Bollywood. The famous songs of the movie were "Nohole porichoy" and "Mitha Mitha Aji Xopunote" by Zubeen Garg.
He has appeared in the movie Kanyadaan (opposite Rashami Desai) with the veteran Mridula Baruah and Chetana Das. He has also given commendable performances in the films Nayak (a love triangle with co-stars Jerifa Wahid and Ravi Sharma), Suren Suror Putek,Kadambari etc.
In the movie Bidhata, which is said to be an Assamese adaptation of the Bollywood movie Anand, the performance was noteworthy.

Jatin Bora has won many awards, the Jyotirupa Joint Media Award for Excellence in Film Television & Music (for Hiya Diya Niya, Nayak, Bidhata, Maa tumi Ananya, Suren Suror Putek), Natasurya Phani Sarma Award (a government of Assam award for Juwe Pura Xun),NE TV people's choice for Kadambari and Maa tumi Ananya, Prag Cine award for Kadambari, Moonlight media award for Hiya Diya Niya, Nayak, Kanyadaan, Bidhata.
